Morbus Bechterew

ImageMorbus Bechterew is an inflammatory-rheumatic disease (spondylitis). Calcareous bridges between the vertebral joints gradually lead to limitations in mobility and to a curvature of the spinal column. In the final stage, these areas become completely hardened. Although the disease affects mostly the spinal column at first, it can expand to all joints and organs such as sinews, eyes and heart. The disease usually begins before the 45th birthday.

Symptoms: In cases of deterioration of the spinal column, you often feel strong back pains when sitting in the area of the loin spine, which partly spread to the thighs. As opposed to other diseases, the pain tends to wither away with motion. Since resting thus has a negative effect, you often feel morning stiffness right after waking up.

Therapy: Morbus Bechterew cannot be completely healed. By means of several kinds of conservative therapies and anti-inflammatory medications, we can halt its progress, however. That way we can inhibit the pains and keep the spinal column mobile. In certain cases, a minimally invasive pain therapy, such as denervation or spinal cord stimulation (pain pace-maker) can improve the situation.
