Scoliosis

ImageScoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spinal column often with simultaneous rotation of the vertebral bodies. It is the most frequent form of back problem among young people. Its origins can usually be attributed to congenital diseases such as rachitis or paralysis. Most often, though, scoliosis is of unknown origin (idiopathic scoliosis), surfacing usually during or shortly before puberty, especially in women.

Symptoms: A typical feature of the condition is the hunchback. In the initial stages of scoliosis, you hardly perceive any problems at all aside from the curved posture. In cases of advanced scoliosis, there is usually a constriction and burdening of the internal organs, such as heart and lungs. Additionally, the curvature provokes wear of the spinal column, which, in its turn, causes pain and limitations in mobility.

Therapy: We treat slight to medium scoliosis by means of conservative therapies, such as physiotherapy or by making the patient wear a corset. Only in cases of a curvature beyond 40 degrees is it necessary to eliminate the flawed positioning by hardening the relevant vertebral segments.
