Spondylodesis (blocking, fusion)

If we obtain no sufficient effect by means of conservative, minimally invasive or microsurgical measures, the possibility of spondylodesis remains in cases of spondylolisthesis, instability of the spinal column, Morbus Bechterew, tumors, spondylitis or spinal trauma. We then perform a blocking (hardening, fusion, flattening) of the relevant section of the spinal column.

Process of Treatment

We often carry out blockings in the spinal column by means of a titanium element to stabilize loosened movement sections. Under general anesthetic, we put screws in the spinal bodies and fix them by means of connective elements.

Sometimes it is necessary to replace the damaged intervertebral disc by means of bone blocks, titanium structures or plastics. In cases of spondylolisthesis, we correct then the spinal column element and immediately fix it in the same position. A few months after the intervention, the vertebral joints grow with the inserted blocks or chips. We thus reach a natural hardening of the relevant section. That way, the loosening is eliminated, the pain is significantly reduced and the possibility of physiotherapy to strengthen the back musculature arises. After such an intervention, you can continue to perform back movements – often actually even better than before.
